Puffing away at a marijuana cigarette while standing behind a tree landed a 20-year-old in trouble with the law for the first time yesterday.
Kadario Raviere Sealy of Olive Drive, Crane, St Philip was found in possession of $55 worth of cannabis on Boxing Day while he was in the area of the Rockley car park in Christ Church.
The scent of the burning weed got the attention of the police who were on patrol. On seeing the cops Sealy threw the cigarette away. It was retrieved and he was asked to account for it as well as five greaseproof wrappings with vegetable matter. He admitted knowledge and ownership.
Standing in the dock before Magistrate Douglas Frederick in the District ‘A’ Magistrates’ Court the first time offender gave an unbelievable explanation for having the illegal drug.
“I was at the Garrison walking on the road going to Rockley . . . I found it and said I would hold it because I have a smoking habit . . . and decided to smoke it and the police come and hold me,” Sealy said.
But the magistrate did not believe the story.
“You can’t walk about the place and pick up things and smoke it. I don’t believe you found this as it doesn’t sound convincing,” Frederick stated to which Sealy replied: “My bad Sir”.
After taking several factors into consideration the magistrate ordered that Sealy complete 80 hours of community service as well as drug counselling by March 29, 2019.
