Stealing from mum lands son in prison

His habit of pilfering his mother’s belongings to sell to support his drug habit resulted in a 25-year-old man being homeless but yesterday he got himself a temporary home at HMP Dodds until January 24.

It was an apparent urge to get his next hit that prompted Daniel Denaro Reece to burglarize his mother’s house sometime between December 12 and 13 where he stole a $100 bottle of rum, four cans of Spam worth $80 and four cans of hotdogs worth $16.

His mom, Diana Reece, only realized that the house had been broken into and the items stolen when she noticed that a mirror was not in its usual position.

The accused’s criminal ways were not only contained to his family home as he ventured onto the premises of the Branford Taitt Polyclinic, the month before – November 7 – under the pretense of helping movers there and tried to leave with three chairs. He was stopped by a security guard and there was a struggle but he managed to run away.

Reece pleaded guilty to the two charges including theft of the three chairs belonging to the Crown when he appeared before Magistrate Douglas Frederick yesterday.

“When I don’t take my psychi meds I find myself doing a lot of foolishness. . . when I take it I feel normal. Right now I am not on it,” Reece told the magistrate as he tried to explain the reasons for his behaviour.

But his trouble with the law did not end there as he pleaded not guilty to assaulting Jody Farum on November 13 occasioning him actual bodily harm. Prosecutor Station Sergeant Carrison Henry revealed that Reece was scheduled to return to court on January 18, 2019 on another pending charge.
