For having $70 worth of illegal drugs, Jeffrey McCllister Welch will have to fork over $900 to the court.
That was the punishment handed down by Magistrate Douglas Frederick to the 42-year-old of Butlers Avenue, Gall Hill, Christ Church, after he pleaded guilty in the District ‘A’ Magistrates’ Court to having cannabis in his possession on December 23, 2018.
The magistrate ordered him to pay $900 in three weeks or he will spend three months in prison.
According to Station Sergeant Carrison Henry, police on patrol in Bay Street saw the accused in the company of two other men on a bench holding a transparent bag.
As the police approached, Welch got up, walked away and dropped the bag on the sand.
The bag was recovered by police and 97 greaseproof wrappings containing vegetable matter suspected to be cannabis was found.
The drugs weighed 13.7 grams.
