Immigration officers today escorted a Jamaican woman out of the Oistins Magistrate's Court after she paid a $10,000 fine for smuggling six pounds of marijuana into the island.
The cannabis, which had an estimated street value of $24,000, was discovered in five sealed packages in a false compartment of Anthea Michaela Cobourne's luggage when she arrived in the country on October 24 from Jamaica via Trinidad.
Station Sergeant Glenda Carter-Nicholls said the 25-year-old bartender told police on her arrest that somebody gave her the suitcase already filled with clothes and another family member added a bit more necessities as she was coming here for vacation.
When she appeared before Magistrate Elwood Watts today she pleaded guilty to possession, possession with intent to supply, trafficking and importation of cannabis.
“I'm sorry,” she told the court before the magistrate imposed the forthwith fine on the importation charge, which was paid and carried an alternative of 18 months in prison.
The Jamaican who had been on remand since her arrest was convicted, reprimanded and discharged on the other offences before being handed over to immigration officials.
