Connell on one-year bond

Floyd Ethan Connell learnt today that his flare gun should only be used when he is going fishing.

His attempts to “frighten” a man he has known for over two decades with that gun landed him in the Holetown Magistrates Court this morning on two charges.

Connell, 67, of Chance Hall Road, St Lucy admitted to unlawfully assaulting Roger Feliciano on October 26, 2018, as well as using the threatening words, “I gine kill you with this” to Feliciano on the same date.

In giving the facts, Station Sergeant Samuel Hinds said both men resided in St Lucy and were accustomed to liming at the Rocky Shore Bar, also in the same parish.

On the day in question, the two men who have known each other for 20 years were in a discussion at the bar which escalated into an argument after they became intoxicated.

Connell became angry and placed his hand in a bag and pulled out an orange and black flare gun and told Feliciano, “I got this to offload in you”.

He then walked away, but returned and pointed the gun at him and issued the threatening words.

The police were called in and Connell was subsequently arrested.

The elderly man who is known to the courts told Magistrate Wanda Blair that he had no intention of shooting Feliciano with the gun.

“I only do it to frighten he,” Connell said.

It was then that he told the magistrate he was in possession of the gun because he had planned to go on a fishing trip.

It was disclosed that Connell’s last conviction had been back in 1993.

“You were wrong to do it. At your age you shouldn’t be coming to court. I want you to leave out the alcohol so you wouldn’t return to court,” Blair told him.

She said because of his age and the fact that he had last been in trouble with the law 25 years ago, she would be lenient on him.

The magistrate then placed him on a bond to keep the peace for one year. If he breaches the bond he will have to pay $700 forthwith or spend two months in prison.
