Afraid for the safety of a teenager who had been remanded to prison, Magistrate Kristie Cuffy-Sargeant felt it necessary to grant him personal bail.
Anthony Junior Bishop, 19, of Chapman Village, St Thomas, had earlier pleaded guilty to loitering in the Cheapside Terminal on May 27, 2018, where he was suspected of planning to commit theft.
However, he had been unable to come up with a suitable surety.
When he reappeared in the District ‘A’ Magistrates’ Court today Cuffy-Sargeant told him she had no interest in holding him as she felt he would be treated unfairly at the Dodds, St Philip, penal institution.
“I feel you will get unfaired. I will allow you to go and come back tomorrow. Whether you find a surety or not come back tomorrow,” she told him.
Before he left the court, though, Bishop was able to secure a surety and was released on $500 bail.
The magistrate told him when he returned to court he would have to speak to a probation officer to see if he would be a fit candidate for community service.
