Kenneth Kerry Burnett will think twice the next time he decides to ‘mekk sport’.
Although he had the money in his pocket to pay for two packs of nuts, Burnett chose to ‘play a prank’ on two security guards who were watching him.
The joke ended up being on the 53-year-old of Retreat Terrace, Black Rock, St Michael, after he was remanded to HMP Dodds until next Tuesday by Chief Magistrate Christopher Birch when he appeared in the District ‘C’ Magistrates Court today.
Although he admitted to stealing two packs of cashew nuts valued $15.80 from A1 Supermarket on May 31, Burnett told the court he always intended to pay for them.
“I go in that supermarket all the time and I have never stolen anything from there because Mr Bynoe buys breadfruits from me. But those two men always watching me and harassing me when I go there,” he explained.
“I had the money, but I say I would mekk some sport. I pick up the nuts and put them in the same pocket that I had the $20 in because I know they were watching me, but when I get to the cashier and I went to pay, the two men wouldn’t allow me to pay. I didn’t leave the store with the nuts. I was denied a chance to pay for them.”
The Chief Magistrate, however, was not entertained by Burnett’s story.
“Making sport has put you in the situation you are in now. Why would you provoke a situation like this if you know you were being watched?” he asked him.
To make matters worse, when prosecutor Sergeant Rudy Pilgrim made a check it was revealed that Burnett had failed to pay a $1,500 fine which had been imposed on him since October 2017 by the District ‘A’ Magistrates Court.
Birch therefore remanded him to prison until June 5 when he will appear in the District ‘A’ Magistrates’ Court.
