Claiming that he had a psychological issue, Jesse She-vann Renee was sent to the Psychiatric Hospital to be evaluated following a request by family members.
Magistrate Douglas Frederick remanded Renee to the Black Rock, St Michael, mental institution over the weekend when he appeared in the District ‘A’ Magistrates' Court.
Renee, 25, of no fixed place of abode, was not required to plead to unlawfully and maliciously wounding Chulang Searles on December 21, 2018.
An aunt who was present in court, told the magistrate that while they did not want Renee sent to prison, they strongly believed he needed help in his current mental state.
She revealed that her nephew regularly talks to himself, is aggressive and constantly interferes with the other occupants in the house.
She said he also could not keep a job for more than a week because of his aggressive nature.
Because of this, she said family members were not keen on standing as a surety and they did not want him to come home and be a “pest”.
It was revealed that Renee had a history of psychological illness in his family and this was further exacerbated by his mother’s death.
“His father or brother don’t want anything to do with him,” a family member said.
However, Renee had a completely different view of things.
He told Frederick that he neither had a psychological problem nor was there any record of him at the Psychiatric Hospital.
In fact, Renee said for the past four years he had not been experiencing any problems.
He also claimed that he and his father had a good relationship and he would be willing to come on his behalf.
Renee was eventually remanded to the hospital after his father never appeared in court.
He will return to court on January 11, 2018.
