For the next 12 months Shaquan Akeem Wilkinson will not be allowed to tread on the sand at Browne’s Beach. If he is caught anywhere along that stretch of beach he will serve a three-month sentence at HMP Dodds.
The 18-year-old of Exchange Hill, St Michael, was placed on a bond to keep the peace and ordered to stay away from the popular beach for the next year by Magistrate Douglas Frederick when he appeared in the District ‘A’ Magistrates’ Court today.
Wilkinson was given the directive after pleading guilty to causing a disturbance whilst at Browne’s Beach, a public place, on December 14.
In disclosing the facts, Station Sergeant Carrison Henry told the court that while Wilkinson was at the beach he was observed by a security guard at the Boatyard going over to an area where a tourist had placed his wallet and cellphone and sitting on the items.
The guard then went over and spoke to Wilkinson, who got up and moved away, but the matter was reported to police.
However, when police approached the accused he raised his voice and behaved aggressively. Several persons who were on the beach witnessed the incident.
However, Wilkinson told the magistrate he did not sit on the wallet or cellphone and that he had no intention to steal the items.
“Sir, I am not a thief or anything. I was helping a man with a jet ski and I just went over to the white man to check and see if he wanted a ride.
“I went and sit down next to the white man and the wallet and phone was in the middle,” he insisted.
The magistrate responded by telling him, “Sounds like you planned to steal the wallet and the phone”.
“No Sir. I ain’t gine tief nothing from no white man. Plus that phone was an iPhone and wha I gine do wid an iPhone?”
After contemplating whether to remand Wilkinson or not, Frederick placed him on the bond and told him to keep away from the area.
“You don’t have a reason to be there. You aren’t to go anywhere on that beach,” the magistrate warned him before he was released.
