An angry teenager who slapped his grandfather in the face, offered a heartfelt apology in court today and as a result escaped having a conviction recorded against him.
When he appeared in the District ‘A’ Magistrates’ Court, 16-year-old Absalom Abejah Francis Hunte of 2nd Avenue Gills Gap, Eagle Hall, St Michael, admitted to assaulting Jeffrey Olton on December 6, 2018.
Olton was present at court and told Magistrate Douglas Frederick he had raised Hunte from a baby. While he said he did not want the young man to lose his job or go to prison, Olton said his grandson needed to recognise the error of his ways.
“I don’t want him to end up in jail. He just got a little job and I want him to keep it,” the elderly man said.
Hunte then had a conversation with his attorney Harry Husbands before issuing a brief but sincere apology which his grandfather hastily accepted.
“I am sorry for disrespecting your house,” he said.
In giving the facts prosecutor Station Sergeant Carrison Henry disclosed that Hunte and some of his friends were at Olton’s residence smoking, but left. When he returned, Hunte realised a marijuana joint he had been smoking was gone and an altercation ensued, during which he slapped Olton in the face. His friends tried to intervene but Hunte kept beating Olton before finally being pulled away.
Before reprimanding and discharging Hunte, the magistrate warned him to stay out of trouble and advised him to concentrate on his new job.
