A Vincentian man has been remanded to Dodds for the next 28 days charged with wounding two brothers, one of whom is scheduled to undergo surgery at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

Curtis Bernard Bute, who lives at Holders Land, Brandon’s, St Michael allegedly committed the crimes against Deque and DeVere Gittens on September 15 with intent to maim, disfigure or disable them or to do some serious bodily harm to them.

Bute was not required to plead to the charges when he appeared before Magistrate Douglas Frederick today. Sergeant Rudy Pilgrim objected to bail for the accused based on the nature and seriousness of the offences.

“One brother is detained at the QEH waiting to undergo surgery and the other had a tube inserted into his chest,” said the prosecutor who explained that the situation was still “volatile”.

Sergeant Pilgrim also submitted the Crown’s fears that Bute may abscond given his status in the country; the fact that all the parties concerned shared a building and the allegation that a knife was used.

In his application for bail, the accused explained that he had applied to the Immigration Department for an extension of his stay. He, however, explained that he was currently trying to finish a job with the construction company which bought him here in other to get money to purchase a valid ticket which was needed for the process.

An immigration officer verified his statements saying that Bute had made the application in June and it was still being processed and awaiting the valid ticket.

Bute further informed the magistrate that he was leaving the apartment to allay the prosecutor’s fear that the situation would escalate even as he revealed that he had been injured in the altercation.

“They stab me with a knife,” Bute said, as he pointed to his chin and his left shoulder saying, “they stab me with a screwdriver”.

However, the magistrate told the accused while he had addressed several of the prosecutor’s concerns the objections to his bail were still “overwhelming”.

“If this person is discharged from hospital and is doing well that will lighten the burden on you . . . But for now, a man is fighting for his life,” the magistrate stated before remanding Bute to prison until October 19.
