Three men appeared before Magistrate Kristie Cuffy-Sargeant today accused of causing a disturbance at a local supermarket but only two owned up to the offence.
Twenty-six-year-old fisherman Patrick Cecil Daniel Yearwood of 19F Fernihurst, Black Rock, St Michael and 29-year-old Rico Orlando Ricardo Caine of Lot 3, 8th Avenue West Terrace, St James pleaded guilty to committing the offence on August 8 at Savings Plus on Princess Alice Highway, The City.
However, 22-year-old fisherman Schae Rashawn Nickoli Grandison of Field Road, Wildey, St Michael pleaded not guilty to the charge and was granted $500 bail to return before the District ‘A’ Magistrate’s Court on November 27.
Sergeant Edwin Pinder told the court police responded to a report of a fight at the supermarket, and when they arrived there they found Yearwood on the outside and Caine was in a room. Both were arrested and later charged.
Yearwood told the court he went to the supermarket with “another fella” who got in a verbal spat with Caine, which later escalated into a fight.
He said after the fight began he held on to Caine not knowing that “the other fella had poked him in the face”.
“I was holding him, he looked around saw me and give me two cuffs in my head and I got involved. I just sorry,” the young man told Cuffy-Sargeant, who told Yearwood he needed to know when to extricate himself from a situation.
“Sometimes you need to run away when you see trouble coming to you. Most of the time it is not necessary to fight back,” she said in reprimanding Yearwood before dismissing the charge.
Meantime, Caine told the magistrate he and the other man have had differences in the past, and on the day the fight broke out all he wanted to do was “use logic and reason with him and ask him what the problem between he and me was [and] why we always have that egotistic matter”.
“I don’t know if his ego get bruise because there were women there and he give me a jab.
“Egotistic and testosterone was just flowing and I was wrong for what I did,” Caine said, before revealing to the court that he was a patient at the Psychiatric Hospital, having checked himself in after using ecstasy and another drug. He said he had been given a day pass to attend court today.
Caine was remanded to the facility to reappear in court on August 15 when he has another matter pending before the No. 1 District ‘A’ Magistrate’s Court. He will find out then whether he is a suitable candidate for drug rehabilitation.
