A 59-year-old man, who pleaded guilty to theft, has been remanded to the Psychiatric Hospital for assessment.
Adwin Alonza Cumberbatch, of My Lord’s Hill, St Michael, requested help for his drug habit after admitting to stealing two rotis and two slices of cake worth $29.40 on June 27.
However, he denied a charge of having cocaine paraphernalia on the same day.
Sergeant Rudy Pilgrim told Magistrate Douglas Frederick the accused entered the Rubis Service Station on Bay Street, The City, about 9:45 a.m. and went over to the display cabinet where the food is kept. He then placed it in a bag and concealed it under his shirt before walking out.
Cumberbatch was captured sometime later with the items.
“They are lying sir . . . . They did not find no items on me because I ate them,” Cumberbatch, who is known to the court, said as he requested drug rehabilitation.
“I did have a relapse and do need a little help,” he added.
However. he will have to wait until July 18 when he is due to return before Magistrate Frederick to know whether he qualifies for a drug rehabilitation programme.
