A water sports operator, who said he was trying to escape the Sargassum weed on the south coast, was made to part ways with $350 after he was held with illegal drugs.
Sadio Okolo Batson, of Maxwell Road, Christ Church, pleaded guilty to having a quantity of cannabis in his possession on June 27.
The illegal substance was found after the Coast Guard conducted a search of Batson’s vessel in the waters just off Pirates Cove.
“The Sargassum seaweed on the south coast real bad sir . . . . That’s why we were down Carlisle Bay,” Batson told Magistrate Douglas Frederick this morning.
The accused, who is known to the court, paid the $350 fine to avoid spending a week in jail.
