Hakeem Alphonso Bourne will spend nine months in prison for pelting a bottle which shattered outside an entertainment venue and slashed the throat of a visitor.

The 21-year-old, of 2nd Berly Lane, Sayer’s Court, Christ Church, unlawfully and maliciously wounded Terrylu Sayers on May 11, while she was partying at Ole Jamming Club.

According to police, Bourne went to the St Lawrence Gap establishment around 12:55 a.m. with seven other men.

The cover charge to get in was $10 at the time and the group which was at the entrance only paid $60. A dispute ensued and they were escorted off the property.

Bourne, who became incensed, crossed the street, armed himself with a bottle and launched it at the club. It shattered and unfortunately for him, a shard slashed the throat of Sayers who was visiting the island from Florida. She was taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital where she received 24 stitches.

“I am very sorry about what happened to the young lady. I was under the influence of alcohol and would like some help,” Bourne, who is known to the court, for burglary and drugs, told Magistrate Douglas Frederick this afternoon.

However, the magistrate made it clear that the offence merited some jail time as Bourne had not only endangered Sayers’ life but others at the club over $10.

“Now she has had a bad experience in Barbados and you have also put the country’s image at risk,” Frederick told Bourne as he imposed the custodial sentence.
