A 39-year-old man, who claimed that he could not remember stealing a bottle of cologne, was given a bit of a break today when he appeared before Magistrate Douglas Frederick.
Timothy Sobers, of 2nd Avenue, Sealy Land, Bank Hall, St Michael, pleaded guilty to two counts of theft when he appeared in the No. 2 District ‘A’ Magistrates’ Court.
Sobers was charged with stealing a bottle of cologne valued at $70.99 from Duty Free Caribbean Holding on May 2, 2018. He was also charged with stealing one bottle of cod liver oil, one bottle of Vitamin C and one bottle of eye drops, with a combined value of $55, from Elbethel Pharmacy.
When asked to explain his actions Sobers replied: “On the cologne matter, I was under the influence of alcohol, Mr Frederick. I wasn’t aware I took it, so I rest it in the wardrobe. When I wake up the next morning, I wasn’t aware. The other things, I definitely take up them. Ah begging you not to hit me too hard.”
Sobers was sentenced to six months in prison for the pharmacy items and three months for the cologne. The two sentences will run concurrently.
“Somehow I believe you. Also, you did not waste my time so you will get just six months even though these crimes carry a sentence of six months each,” Frederick said.
