A 21-year-old unemployed man, accused of robbing two people on the same day, will spend the next 28 days at HMP Dodds.
It is alleged that Shalom Shem Batson, of no fixed place of abode, robbed Janelle Skeete of a $198 bag, a $59 purse, a $1,500 cellular phone, a $30 phone case, a driver’s licence and $1,200 in cash on April 27. He is accused of committing the same act against Regis Burton on the same day and making away with a US$80 wallet, as well as US$250 and BDS$5 in cash.
Today, Batson was not required to plead when he appeared before Magistrate Douglas Frederick as it is alleged that a firearm was used in carrying out the offences.
When it came time for bail Sergeant Edwin Pinder objected on the grounds that investigations were ongoing with police searching for two other suspects.
The prosecutor also pointed out that the accused had other matters pending before the court and had not been adhering to his bail conditions. It was therefore feared that he would reoffend if released on bail.
Siding with the prosecution, the magistrate denied submissions by Batson’s attorney Andrew Pilgrim, QC, for his release on bail.
The accused returns to the No. 1 District ‘A’ Magistrates’ Court on June 5.
