It may not be very long before former head of the Barbados Private Sector Charles Herbert is allowed to keep his passport.
Back in July, the 62-year-old Herbert of Redland Plantation, St George, along with Chris Rogers and Walter Oneal Prescod, was charged with possession of cannabis, possession with intent to supply cannabis, trafficking of cannabis and importation of cannabis
The drugs reportedly weighed 267 lbs (121.4 kilogrammes) and had an estimated street value of $534 160. Herbert was released on $400 000 bail with two sureties on condition that he gave up his passport.
However, when he returned to the District ‘A’ Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, his attorney-at-law Queen’s Counsel Andrew Pilgrim asked the court if it was possible for his client’s bail to be increased to $500,000 and his passport returned.
Pilgrim told the court that because of Herbert’s position as a Director he was required to travel regularly. “He has travelled twice already and because of his position he will also have to travel twice in January. If the court is moved to make some adjustments to his conditions so we don’t have to return to court every three weeks to apply for permission to travel,” Pilgrim said.
“I am proposing that we increase his bail amount to $500,000 and get back his passport.”
Magistrate Douglas Frederick told the attorney-at-law it was a proposal they would discuss on Herbert’s next appearance.
He then granted the accused permission to travel until March 27, 2019, when he is expected to return to court.
