The matter for which St Elmo Wilbert Lewis is charged has been ‘playing on his mind’. And in the two months that he has spent on remand he has lost 40 pounds.
As he stood in the dock of the District ‘A’ Magistrates’ Court, Lewis, who has been at the Dodds prison since October 12 on a charge of indecently assaulting a male on September 19, 2018, maintained his innocence.
In an impassioned bail application, the 56-year-old handyman of Clevedale, Black Rock, St Michael told Magistrate Douglas Frederick he was being wrongfully imprisoned and it was beginning to affect him mentally.
“When I first went to prison I was 160 pounds and right now I am 120 pounds. This thing is really affecting me to the point I feel I would get a nervous breakdown because I didn’t assault anybody,” Lewis said.
“This thing is really playing on mind. When I am guilty I come and plead guilty. I don’t waste the court’s time. I am innocent but the police are judging me on my past. You can’t judge a man’s future on his past.”
Prosecutor Station Sergeant Carrison Henry maintained his objections to Lewis being granted bail, saying that he was a threat to society and had a propensity to interfere with young boys.
“Sir, I was out in society for two years and I ain’t do nobody nothing,” was Lewis’ instant response.
He then tried unsuccessful to get in contact with a possible surety, after the magistrate asked him if he had anyone to sign his bail.
Frederick gave the accused man a return date on January 11, 2019, when his sister is expected to be present in court to stand as a surety.
