A St Michael man accused of having sex with his young niece and indecently assaulting another minor was remanded to HMP Dodds today.
The 33-year-old man was sent to prison on remand by Magistrate Kristie Cuffy-Sargeant when he appeared in the District ‘A’ Magistrates’ Court on the two indictable charges.
He is charged with having sexual intercourse with his niece between January 1, 2016 and April 30, 2016, as well as indecently assaulting a minor between June 9, 2016 and January 23, 2018.
In objecting to bail prosecutor Sergeant Cameron Gibbons said both of the matters were “very serious”, and pointed out that the victims were “of a very tender age”.
He said the victims resided at the same house as the accused and he feared if granted bail he would re-offend.
Gibbons also argued that there was a need to protect society as well as the accused from himself.
However, the accused told the magistrate he was the lone caretaker of his mother.
“I help my mother at home. I’m the only person that is there when I’m not at work and she has two bad knees,” he explained. “I am also helping her to finish build the house. I also went through training since the incident happened in 2016 so you don’t have to worry about me doing anything like that.”
He will return to court on January 4, 2019.
