Michael Tramane Sobers tried to trick Magistrate Kristie Cuffy-Sargeant into believing that he only smoked occasionally.
But once the magistrate heard that he had been caught with 41 grease-proof wrappings of cannabis, he hastily admitted to “smoking five joints a day”.
The 21-year-old of 1st Avenue Weekes Land, Goodland, St Michael, made the admission in the District ‘A’ Magistrates’ Court today after he pleaded guilty to having cannabis in his possession on December 4, 2018.
Police constable Troy Jordan told the court that police were on patrol when the accused man was seen among other persons liming outside a shop in his district.
As police approached he went into the shop, but not before he was seen dropping an object from his hand.
The object was retrieved and Sobers was held. A check revealed a transparent bag which contained 41 grease-proof wrappings containing vegetable matter.
When asked to account for the illegal drugs he said, “That is the weed I pelt way when I see the police coming.”
The drugs weighed 12.26 grams and had a street value of $70. As he stood in the dock, Sobers said the drugs were for his personal use.
“It won’t happen again. I intended to smoke it, but not all at one time,” he told the magistrate after she asked him what he had intended to do with the drugs.
Cuffy-Sargeant then asked him how often he smoked cannabis.
“I smoke about twice a week,” was his initial response.
However, when pressured by the magistrate about the quantity of drugs he was carrying, he said he normally smoked five joints in one day.
“You are going to record your first conviction,” Cuffy-Sargeant told him.
She then imposed a fine of $1000 in two months, with an alternative of three months in prison.
Sobers will return to court on February 8, 2019.
