It was off to the Psychiatric Hospital for a drug addict today after he asked for assistance in dealing with his problem.
Gaylan Marshall, 41, of #6 Trents Tenantry, St James, was remanded to the Black Rock institution until November 19 by Magistrate Wanda Blair after he pleaded guilty to stealing two bottles of Ciroc Vodka from Massy Stores in Holetown on October 27.
Marshall told the court he began using crack cocaine in 2016 after he was introduced to it by a family member following the death of his mother.
“I am not a criminal as people here are making me out to be. I want an opportunity to be a proper citizen. I’m begging for a chance,” the known offender said.
He admitted that he had previously undergone treatment at Verdun House, but had been discharged from the programme.
It was also revealed that Marshall had appeared in the District ‘A’ Magistrates Court earlier this year where he had pleaded guilty to stealing repellent and cheese from a supermarket, and had spent 28 days at Dodds prison.
Blair then remanded him to the Psychiatric Hospital, where she said it would be determined if he was a fit candidate for Verdun House.
Station Sergeant Samuel Hinds told the court that Marshall went into Massy and was observed by a security guard taking up the property and putting it into his bag.
He then attempted to leave the store but the sensors were activated. He was stopped and after consenting to a search the alcohol was found.
Marshall then placed the bag on the ground and attempted to run but was pursued and held.
He was then taken to the police station.
