Drunk and disorderly

A 39-year-old fisherman, who could not control his liquor, will spend the next three weeks at the Psychiatric Hospital being assessed by doctors.

“I am willing to make that sacrifice. I need to stop drinking,” Gregg Sylvester Sealy, of No 75 Galloway Path, Waterford, St Michael told Magistrate Douglas Frederick today.

He pleaded guilty to possession of a small quantity of cannabis but not guilty to resisting and assaulting special constable Kerryann Burnett in the execution of her duties on September 23.

“The lady [Burnett] I can’t even remember what she looks like . . . they told me that I was so drunk that I didn’t know what I was doing.

“To be honest with you I don’t even remember getting into my car. I woke up in the police station on [Monday] and don’t know how I got there. Everybody told me I can’t control my drinks but I just like to drink,” Sealy said in the District ‘A’ Magistrate’s Court.

He then told the magistrate that he was desirous of getting help for his addiction as he had been rejected by a rehabilitation entity previously.

“I need to stop. I need to stop drinking,” he said, adding he was willing to make the sacrifice of going to the Psychiatric
Hospital for assessment instead of paying a fine that would have seen him going home today.

“You were given an easy way out but you took the long road and it says that you are ready for a change,” the magistrate said as he remanded Sealy to the mental health institution until October 16.
