Bail denied to fraud accused

A 29-year-old fraud-accused man will spend the next 28 days on remand at Dodds prison.

Jerome Omar Waterman, of 3rd Avenue, Sisnett Road, Bannister Land, St Michael, was sent up to the St Philip penal institution after strong objection was raised to his bail by the prosecutor, Station Sergeant Samuel Hinds.

Waterman is accused of uttering and forging RBC Royal Bank (Barbados) Limited cheques in the amounts of $2,494.40 and $1,503.83, payable to Nassco Limited, and drawn on the account of Prestige Collision and Coach Builders on October 21 with intent to defraud. He is also accused of purchasing car parts from Nassco with the same forged cheques.

Waterman is further accused of uttering and endeavouring to obtain monies from Welches Post Office via a forged CIBC FirstCaribbean International Bank Limited cheque made payable to Ryan Akil Lewin and drawn on the account of the National Insurance Benefit Payment Scheme on May 25. On May 28, another forged cheque worth $1,310 was made payable to Omar Alex Harris via the same method.

The accused was not required to plead to the indictable charges when he appeared before Magistrate Douglas Frederick today.

However, the prosecutor objected to bail on the grounds that Waterman was currently on bail with similar matters pending in the No. 1 & 2 District ‘A’ magistrates’ courts.

“The allegations suggest that the accused although granted bail on previous occasions has seemingly reoffended and has shown disregard to the trust placed in him by the court,” Hinds submitted as he pointed to the serious nature of the charges and the need to protect society.

In his plea for bail, Waterman told the magistrate that he wanted his freedom in order to take care of his children.

His application was denied.

The accused returns before Magistrate Frederick on August 31.
