Two Guyanese nationals, a man and woman, who have been on remand for the last year on a joint rape charge have been offered $20,000 bail each.
They are 37-year-old Clara Alexis Martin and 29-year-old Sean Christopher Nelson, both of whom reside at Kings Street, St Michael.
It is alleged that they had sexual intercourse with a female on June 11, 2017, knowing that she did not consent to the act or was reckless as to whether she consented.
The duo has not been able to enter a plea on the charge as it is indictable and can only be heard in the High Court.
The accused have been on remand since their first appearance on June 14 last year despite several bail applications by their attorneys.
However, Martin, who is represented by attorney Tariq Khan, and Nelson, who has Andrew Willoughby as his legal counsel, must first present suitable sureties, who can present the necessary documents to show that they can honour the bail amount, to Magistrate Kristie Cuffy-Sargeant.
If they are able to post bail the accused must surrender their passports to the No. 2 District ‘A’ Magistrates’ Court, report to Central Police Station and to stay away from the complainant.
They return before the court on July 13.
