No ease for Whitney

To say the last month has been rough for Jamal Whitney might be an understatement.

After he was released from prison last month, the 25-year-old, of 3rd Avenue, Licorish Village, My Lord’s Hill, St Michael, who is recovering from a surgical procedure carried out on Monday, is back behind bars.

Despite pleading not guilty to trespassing at the home of Lance Whitney and stealing a pair of $350 shoes on May 12, 2018, he was remanded to HMP Dodds today by Magistrate Kristie Cuffy-Sargeant when he appeared in the District ‘A’ Magistrates’ Court.

Prosecutor Sergeant Cameron Gibbons, in objecting to bail for the accused, noted the seriousness of the charge, the strength of the evidence and the need for society to be protected.

Gibbons said what was even more damning was the fact that Whitney had 24 previous convictions, 19 of which occurred under the Theft Act.

However, in his bail application, Whitney, who stood in the dock with heavy bandages on his head and left arm clutching his stomach, said he was still recovering from the medical procedure.

“I didn’t break in, I live at the same residence. I just came out of surgery on Monday and I don’t feel I can manage in prison,” he told the magistrate, under whose questioning it was revealed that Whitney was recently released from prison in April.

He was remanded to custody until June 12.
