A 27-year-old “professional burglar” has been sentenced to four years in prison.
Jason Omar Mason of Browne’s Gap, Sargeants Village, Christ Church accepted his fate in the No. 5 Supreme Court today.
Mason was 21-years-old when he and another person entered the home of Keith and Patricia Corbin as trespassers on August 8, 2011.
They walked through the house and stole two watches, a gift set, two pairs of cufflinks, 11 rings, one bracelet, two cameras,
US$2,400, £400 and BDS$400 belonging to Keith Corbin, as well as three pairs of earrings, two bracelets, two watches, a necklace, a chain, three rings, a quantity of costume jewellery and BDS$2, 400 belonging to Patricia Corbin. The stolen items and cash totalled $32, 871.50.
Magistrate Elwood Watts, then Principal Crown Counsel, was the prosecutor in the case.
He said Mr Corbin returned to his home around 12:30 p.m. on the day in question to find the drawers and doors in the house had been broken and items scattered about.
Police were called in and Mason was subsequently arrested.
“No doubt the victims would have experienced a grave violation of their privacy as you and your co-accused left your mark on virtually every room in their home,” Madam Justice Jacqueline Cornelius told Mason during his sentencing hearing today.
“You are a persistent offender and a professional burglar. At 27, you have amassed 22 [prior convictions],” Cornelius said as she considered the 1, 082 days Mason had already spent on remand.
As such, he only has one year and 13 days left to serve of his sentence.
